Central California's wonderful from top to bottom--literally. At the bottom, you have the famous Central Valley, stretching hundreds of miles and hosting the state's lushest wetlands, world-famous wineries, and historic Gold Rush sites--not to mention birds found few (and in some cases, no) other places, like the Yellow-Billed Magpie, Tricolored Blackbird, and California Condor. At the top, you have some of the world's most picturesque mountains: the Sierras, within which lie the wondrous Sequoias, Lake Tahoe, and--you guessed it--more amazing wildlife.
